Without review and corrective action planning, minor deviations from plan accumulate to create problems. Left alone for a couple of weeks, these problems fester and turn into emergencies.

Performance Review

Weekly action planning – in the form of a performance review – need not be a painful experience. Well run businesses have a routine established which ensures that the management team spend around an hour once a week reviewing the business metrics which, left un-monitored, can easily drift away from plan in a few days. This review is the team’s opportunity to ensure that time is reserved for working on the business (as opposed to in the business) as a matter of routine.

The Problem

Busy people are easily distracted by the problems and issues that arise every minute in any business. Without some form of regular review, particularly in heavily transactional businesses, it is easy for the business performance to become a horrifying and nasty surprise at the monthly performance review or board meeting.

It takes time to establish a culture in which different aspects of the business can be reviewed and corrective actions be identified without people resorting to allocating blame rather than concentrating on the business issues.
